Understanding the Process of Steel Fabrication for Your Tiny Home

There are several parts of your tiny home project that can use steel fabrication. You may already know that you can order special steel pieces for the home design. What you may not know is the process that you have to go through with the fabrication contractor. Here are a few of the steps to the fabrication of your steel order and what you need to know about each step.

Blueprint Stages

Even if you have the design in mind, your fabrication contractor will need to take those designs and put them into blueprint form. The blueprint gives the fabricator an idea of how best to take your design and construct it properly. Once the blueprints are done and agreed upon, the fabricator will take them and create shop drawings. The shop drawings are what the fabricators use to build or fabricate the steel pieces. These drawings can show measurements and steps that need to be taken to create whatever item it is you need for the tiny home. This is a vital stage, especially with tiny homes, due to the specific and sometimes odd length measurements for things like windows and guttering.

Cutting and Measuring

The most vital part of steel fabrication for any tiny home is the cutting stage. For example, if you are having a bathroom enclosure created, the spacing and cuts have to be exact. The cuts will need to fit the area for the bathroom enclosure as well as the smaller drain pipes and fittings that are common within tiny homes. If the cuts are off, they could be too large and cause the pipes to not fit. The entire area would have to be recut in order to fit properly, which will delay the project.

Steel Finishing

If the fabricator skips the steel finishing, you would be left with rough ends, rough parts and some areas that are duller than others. The steel finishing step is a final step to ensure that the part you have ordered is ready for installation. For example, if you are ordering steel fabricated guttering, the final steps would be to ensure there are no bumps or sharp points on the guttering and that all attachment areas are correctly finished and placed. This means you would only need to attach the guttering when you receive the steel pieces.

When you are ready to hire a steel fabrication contractor, make sure to schedule a consultation first. They can discuss the designs you have, and you may be able to speed the process along. They can also discuss pricing, delivery dates and installation options that are available for the fabrication parts you are ordering.
